Grammatical Issues ofIdiomatic Expressions Interpretation

Wewill now have a close look at some aspects ofphrasal expressions. An important fact that has to be stressed is that idioms are not only colloquial words, as many people think. They may emerge in formal style and in colloquial speech. They may appear in verse or in the masterpieces of Dickens and business letters.

What, then, is an idiomatic expression? One may say that an idiom is some collocation of elements which, taken together, mean something special from the separate expressions of the idiom when they stand individually. The way in which the expressions are put together is often weird, strange or even grammatically wrong. These are the individual properties of some idioms. Other idioms are completely common and logical in their grammatical aspects and vocabulary. Due to the individual properties of some idioms, we shall learn the idiom in general and we sometimes cannot change any part of it (except perhaps, only the grammatical form of the verb).
English language is very rich in idiomatic expressions. Actually, it is hard to speak or write English language without using idiomatic expressions. An English native speaker is sometomes not aware that he is using an idiom; perhaps he does not even understand that an idiom which he implements is grammatically wrong. A non-native learner makes the correct use of idiomatic English one of his main goals, and the fact that some idioms are illogical or grammatically incorrect causes him difficulty. Only careful study and exact learning will help.
It cannot be explained why a particular idiom has developed an unusual arrangement or choice of phrases. The idiom has been fixed by long usage as is often seen from the vocabulary.
